ABOUT THE ARTIST

Princess Cureton is a mixed media three-dimensional figurative artist based in Charlotte, NC. She is known for creating work that looks like it might walk off the canvas. Her work is autobiographical, reflecting the consonance or dissonance of life against a surreal background. She combines acrylic with relief sculpting on canvas to draw the viewer deep into the narrative and add elements of illusion and surprise.

After spending nearly 40 years in art education, Cureton retired in 2014 to pursue art full-time. While traveling throughout the Caribbean, Greece, China and Japan as an artist, teacher and student of other cultures, her eyes were opened to experiences that continue to fuel creativity in her studio today.

Cureton has participated in many solo and group exhibitions across the U.S. and Caribbean and is currently a member of the Mint Hill Arts Organization in Mint Hill, NC. She has also been awarded several grants and fellowships in her art career, such as a grant from the Comparative Education Program in CT to teach art to children in China in 2009, a Fulbright Educator Fellowship Grant to study art and tech in Japan in 1998 and most recently, a Creative Renewal Fellowship Grant from the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte NC in 2022.

Cureton currently works in her studio at the Visual and Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC.
